{"id":470,"date":"2019-10-21T16:30:06","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T16:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myapps.northcarolina.edu\/transfertoolbox\/?p=470"},"modified":"2019-10-21T16:30:06","modified_gmt":"2019-10-21T16:30:06","slug":"faculty-mentors-help-pave-the-way-to-success-for-app-state-transfer-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myapps.northcarolina.edu\/transfertoolbox\/2019\/10\/21\/faculty-mentors-help-pave-the-way-to-success-for-app-state-transfer-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty mentors help pave the way to success for App State transfer students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>https:\/\/today.appstate.edu\/2019\/10\/09\/transfer-students<\/p>\n<p>BOONE, N.C. \u2014 Students who transfer to Appalachian State University find support programs tailored to promote their success \u2014 including opportunities to connect with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/transfer.appstate.edu\/about\/faculty-transfer-mentors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty Transfer Mentors<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 through the university\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/transfer.appstate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of Transfer Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, 1,449 new transfer students \u2014 1,230 on Appalachian\u2019s main campus and 219\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/online.appstate.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App State Online<\/a>\u00a0enrollees \u2014 joined the Mountaineer population. Some will take the initiative to connect with one of over 100 faculty mentors who have been trained by the Office of Transfer Services to understand the specific needs of transfer students and who will support their academic development.<\/p>\n<p>The mentors, who are most often in the student\u2019s area of study, aid the student in understanding the curriculum and coursework requirements, and provide guidance, support and referral to resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFaculty play a critical role in a student\u2019s success,\u201d said Dr. Kim Morton, associate director in the Office of Transfer Services. \u201cSince transfer students are coming in later than traditional first-year students, they have less time to establish relationships. The faculty mentors help bridge that gap.
