The University provides several programs that can help protect your income streams in case of disability or death. 

UNC System Group Term Life Insurance

The UNC System has partnered with Securian Financial to provide a consolidated life insurance plan that offers coverage for employees, spouses or domestic partners, and dependent children. The links below include important information about what’s available to you. Learn more about the coverage options available to you, special plan features and services and costs for coverage. You can also calculate your estimated monthly premium payment, which will be conveniently deducted from your paycheck.

New for 2023! UNC System Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D)

Disability Income Plan of North Carolina

Short- and Long-Term Disability Benefits

The Disability Income Plan of North Carolina (DIPNC) provides monthly replacement income to individuals in the form of short-term, extended short-term, and long-term disability benefits if you become disabled while you are a permanent employee and are enrolled in either the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) or the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS).

Supplemental Disability Programs

For ORP Participants

This is a voluntary supplemental disability plan underwritten by The Standard and designed exclusively for participants of the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP).

For TSERS Members

This is a voluntary supplemental disability plan underwritten by Lincoln Financial, designed exclusively for University employees who are members of the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS).
