Discussions with campuses about each institution’s data analytics agenda and journey inevitably raise the topic of predictive modeling. Each campus is progressing from descriptive analytics (what happened, to whom and when, and related fact books, reports, and trend analysis) to more predictive and prescriptive analytics and forecasting: why did it happen, will it happen again and if so to whom and when, and which interventions will improve the situation and related outcomes, especially activating student services that will increase the likelihood of student success.

During the April 2020 Insight monthly community call, Renee Teate from HelioCampus and Deloris Gee from NC A&T led a discussion of patterns of success in data science and predictive modeling, how HelioCampus approaches Insight Level 3 projects of this nature, and an example of a predictive modeling project deployed at NC A&T to direct advising and other student services to students at risk academically using a multi-factor risk scoring model. Bad news: that superb discussion is highly sought after BUT occurred before the monthly Insight calls were being recorded successfully for replay. Good news: Renee presented this again in March 2021 to UNC Pembroke, and thanks to UNC Pembroke and HelioCampus plus the miracle of recorded Zoom video conferences and cloud file storage, you can view this presentation on demand.
