A Data Catalog is now available to any authorized Insight user to assist you in understanding where fields are used among Tableau sites, projects, workbooks, and data sources. You can understand each field’s name, role, and whether it’s native or calculated. If it’s calculated, you can hover over the formula and see the fields used and the derivation code, for example for the Admission High School GPA Bins in this screenshot of the Data Catalog.
You can navigate top-down, for example by choosing a project or workbook of interest at the top-center. Then, explore the various fields and their role, native column name or calculated field code and logic. Or you can navigate bottom-up, by choosing one or more of the formula/source fields of interest at the top-right, and see where it is used among data sources, workbooks, projects or sites that you are permitted to access. You can also view all fields, or filter on calculated fields, or native columns. The scope of what you can view matches the workbooks that you can view on the Insight Tableau Server — workbooks are limited to the workbooks available in the production Insight projects. A Level 2 campus user also has access to workbooks in the campus’ project folders, that he or she is authorized to view. As it states under the title, the data are refreshed around 5pm daily.
You’ll find the Data Catalog in the Campus Admin folder on the Insight Tableau Server. A demo of the Data Catalog was recorded during the Insight monthly community call on August 13, 2021. You can view the replay using the link available in the meeting notes.
