Important

As of Sept. 1, 2023, the University moved to TIAA as the single recordkeeper for the UNC System retirement plans. Employees with a balance in one or more of the UNC System retirement plans (Optional Retirement Program, UNC 457(b), UNC 403(b) plans) will receive detailed transition information at their home address via US Mail in late January. This information is also available here:

UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP)

The University of North Carolina Optional Retirement Program (ORP) is an alternative to the North Carolina Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) for faculty and staff. Under the ORP, you control your investment choices, distribution methods, and retirement goals, whereas the State controls the investments under TSERS.

The University has authorized TIAA to offer investment products under the ORP. For more information about TIAA or their products, including investment options, services and fees, you should review the information on this website, as well as contact a company representative. You can also learn more about TIAA by watching the “Why TIAA” short video.
